The castle is straightforward to reach from central Budapest. The Metro M1 (Yellow Line) drops you a 5–6 minute walk away, and several bus and trolleybus lines stop at Heroes' Square, from where it is a 10–12 minute walk through the park. The castle is also an easy addition to a Heroes' Square or Széchenyi Baths visit, as all three are within a 10-minute walk of each other.

The M1 is the most direct and fastest option from central Pest. Trains run every few minutes during the day.

Recommended routes:

  • Via Andrássy Avenue (Andrássy út); the most direct and scenic approach from central Pest, ending at Heroes' Square. Turn into City Park from Hősök tere.
  • Via Dózsa György Road, runs along the east side of City Park and connects directly to parking at the Museum Underground Parking.

Note: There are no congestion zone restrictions in City Park. However, several roads inside the park are pedestrian-only or have restricted vehicle access. Do not attempt to drive to the castle entrance itself.

How to enter Vajdahunyad Castle

The castle has two points of entry for visitors. Both are on the island, accessible via separate bridges.

Gatehouse entrance (north side, stone bridge): The main approach to the castle. Cross the stone bridge on the north side of the park lake; the Gatehouse arch, flanked by stone lion sculptures holding the Budapest coat of arms, is directly ahead. This entrance is best for:

  • Accessing the Gatehouse Tower (left of the arch)
  • Arriving for a guided Apostles' Tower tour

Museum entrance (east side, near the Anonymus statue): Located on the east side of the island, this entrance leads directly into the museum lobby and services. This entrance is best for:
