Matthias Church Tower

The Matthias Church Tower is the Matthias Church’s dedicated viewpoint experience, taking you up to a panoramic terrace overlooking Budapest. The tower is a separate ticketed experience from the Matthias Church interior and can only be visited at a scheduled time.

Why visit the Matthias Church Tower?

The tower combines a short guided introduction with a climb to the observation level. From the 47-metre-high tower, you can look out across Budapest and the Buda Castle District. The tower itself also has a long history: its construction was completed in 1470, during the reign of King Matthias Corvinus, whose coat of arms was placed on the tower and eventually gave the church its familiar name.

  • By bus: Get off at Szentháromság tér, the closest verified bus stop, around a 1–3-minute walk from the church.
  • By funicular: Take the Castle Hill Funicular and continue on foot through the Buda Castle District to the church.
  • By taxi: Ask to be dropped near Holy Trinity Square, then continue the short walk to the church.
  • By car: Driving is not the recommended option for most visitors; a dedicated church parking facility has not been verified.
  • From Matthias Church: The Bell Tower is part of the Matthias Church complex, so you can reach it directly from the church area.

Start with a guided introduction

A tower visit begins with a short 10-minute guided tour, giving context before you begin the climb.

Begin the climb

Follow a 197-step route through a historic church tower to reach its panoramic terrace. The staircase is narrow, with a diameter of about 60 cm, so the climb requires care and steady movement.

Discover the tower's details

As you climb, look beyond the view at the tower itself and its architectural details. The larger tower recalls the era of King Matthias, while the smaller Béla Tower reflects the style of the period of King Béla IV.

Reach the bell tower

The tower is home to six bells, including the more than 300-year-old Holy Trinity Bell and the much larger Christ Bell.

Step onto the panoramic terrace

After the climb, reach the observation level approximately 47 metres above ground and take in the Budapest panorama.

Take in the view, then descend

The tower experience ends with the same 197-step route back down. Wear secure footwear and keep phones and cameras safely attached while on the stairs and terrace.

A tower with a long history

  • 1384 — Tower collapse: The earlier southern tower collapsed during Mass.
  • 1470 — Matthias Tower completed: The present tower was completed, and King Matthias placed his coat of arms on it.
  • Ottoman occupation — Minaret: After the church was converted into a mosque, the tower was used as a minaret.
  • Later centuries — Clock tower: The tower was subsequently adapted for use as a clock tower.
  • Until 1911 — Fire lookout: As the highest point in the Castle District, it served as a fire lookout until 1911.
  • Today — Bell tower & viewpoint: The tower houses six bells and forms part of the visitor experience, with an observation level offering views over Budapest.

Tips & things to know

  • The climb feels tighter than the number of steps suggests. The staircase is narrow and the steps are small, with some guests turning back when they found the ascent uncomfortable. If you are uncomfortable in confined spaces, this is worth considering before you commit to the climb.
  • Give yourself time to pause. The tower is more than a viewpoint: the climb takes you through a historic part of the church, so don't feel you need to rush to the top.
  • Pair it with the Castle District rather than treating it as a standalone stop. Visitors commonly combine Matthias Church with Fisherman's Bastion and the surrounding Castle District, making it easy to build the tower into a wider walking route. Plan your visit to Matthias Church.
